This may be the only thrilling opportunity I have to tag a post with both “Flannery O’Connor” and “The Criterion Collection.” So here goes…
The Criterion Collection is already wondrous beyond all measure, but do they really have to show off like this?
They’re adding John Huston’s legendary 1979 adaptation of Flannery O’Connor’s Wise Blood in May.
And Harry Dean Stanton! Great news indeed. I’ll be pre-ordering this one.
And here I thought I would have to content myself with Tommy Lee Jones’ “The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada” as the closest thing to a Flannery O’Connor story available on film. This is undoubtedly the coolest news of the year so far. Particularly as I am exploring the possibility of a thesis on some aspect of film adaptations of southern literature, and O’Connor is my favorite southern author. I have long wanted to see this, and was starting to wonder if I ever would. Having such a high-quality release generally available will be amazing.
