Brian Volck saw There Will Be Blood for the first time on DVD.
That’s too bad, as it was a riveting big-screen experience.
But Volck does not appear to have suffered much. He was, to borrow the term my friend Brandon Fibbs employed when he first saw the movie, “gobsmacked.”
Here’s his response, at Image.
I just saw There Will Be Blood on DVD a few weeks ago myself. I finished the movie wondering if there was any substance to it at all, although I thought the style and cinematography were stunning. The more I mulled it over, the more I felt that the film had nothing to say, except perhaps that greed was bad, and that some people are greedy. Or perhaps that our nation has been founded upon two great, competing cons: unrestrained capitalism and religion. Either way, I was worried that the film played with my emotions without offering anything of substance to justify such emotions. But, maybe I need to watch it again. I might have misjudged it.
Thanks for the link. That was a fascinating read.
