If you care about kids and what they’re learning in school,
and if you care about great art,
then let me warn you,
when you read what my friend Martin posted on his blog about something that happened to his wife Sarah, well, you might just lose all restraint and start spouting inappropriate language at the computer.
Hm. “Lose all restraint and start spouting inappropriate language at the computer.” Wish I could’ve been there when you did THAT, Jeffrey.
Thanks for the link!
This is tragic and my heart goes out to these people. I don’t think this is, however, still the norm. It would not have happened in any of the five Christian Schools I have worked in.
I acted with a gentleman who had directed a production of Measure for Measure at a major West coast Shakespeare festival. He’d done quite a lot of research on regional Viennese nunnerys & their induction services for one of the characters (Isabella, I think). The service calls for the woman to remove her clothes & put on the nun’s habit. This was done totally behind a screen & the actress was in a body suit. Very tasteful. He even put in the director’s notes that the scene was authentic for the time period. But the festival received tons of letters of the “how dare you show a nude woman on your stage, please cancel my membership” variety.
The director did not mention to me if folks were opposed to what they say (or thought they saw) because of religion so I never assumed it was. But folks will see what they want to see & one never knows what folks might be offended by.
I was in a community college theater production of A Christmas Carol & all actors were pressed into service to distribute posters for the show for windows in local businesses. I went into one store & asked if they’d mind a poster in their window that I’d gladly remove after the show’s run was over. The woman said, “What’s it about?” (!) I explained how a bitter, miserly old man is visited by ghosts of Christmas past, present & future who help him to discover the true meaning of Christmas. The woman said (I can still see her face), “WE‘re Christians here & we’ll have nothing to do with ghosts or other such evil things!” To which I wanted to respond that Charles Dickens was a Christian & so am I, but she didn’t look as if it would matter.
‘Tis a strange world.
