I sat spellbound a few nights ago basking in the glow of Aerial, the new double-album from Kate Bush. Apparently, I’m not the only one. This is a delightful surprise in an otherwise unremarkable year in music so far. Dude, you just haven’t been listening to the right records. I think it’s been a pretty good year for music, if not as satisfying as last year. But Andrew Bird’s album is a masterpiece, and Sufjan Stevens and Charlie Sexton come close to hitting that mark themselves. Plus there’s Fiona Apple, Erin McKeown, Over the Rhine, Holopaw, and, of course, Kate Bush… all of these are albums that sound built to stand the test of time.
I’ve heard some of those you name, and I agree… they’re great albums. But I don’t find myself ALWAYS WANTING TO LISTEN TO THEM the way I did with Arcade Fire this year, U2 and Sam Phillips and Nick Cave last year. I admire all of them, enjoy them for the most part, but none of these are going to be all-time favorites for me.
Will they ever do better than “The New World”? What do they feel is lacking in that movie?
Not only does “The New World” give us the “eyes to see”, it gives us the very thing we long to see with those new eyes. It is self-fulfilling.
