This morning, my friend Bob Denst — a gifted poet who is studying in Seattle Pacific University’s MFA in Creative Writing program, and a new Looking Closer Specialist — sent me this note…
Had a dream that I was watching a new Terrence Malick movie this morning. There was an incredible single shot that started from a very tight close-up of hands that were grinding optical glass through an old machine that acted like a coffee grinder so that the glass could be used as a poultice on a wound. The camera then pulled back and out of the room, moved outside and and over the beautiful surrounding country landscape, keeping just below tree level and gradually increasing its speed. Eventually, it started making a very wide circle in an open, green field, going ever faster until I could feel the centrifugal force pulling at my body. I had to partially wake up so as not to get overly dizzy and motion-sick. Even by Malick’s standards, the spinning seemed a bit much, but it was pretty to look at.
I had to laugh, because a couple of weeks ago I dreamed that I was in a new Wachowski Brothers movie, in which Harrison Ford and I were running through a futuristic high-rise parking garage trying to escape A.I. drones. It was exciting, but I wasn’t scared because I knew that were were just acting in a big-budget movie. But there came a point when Ford inexplicably had vanished (I’d forgotten about him in the dream), and I was seriously running for my life, lost like a Seinfeld character in a Kafka-esque parking fortress from hell.
This made me wonder… how often do people dream about movies?
Do you ever have dreams where you believe you’re watching a movie?
Have you ever had a dream that you’re in a movie?
If so, is is a film you’ve seen recently, or something strange and seemingly random?
I’d love to hear about it.
I dreamt in black and white! I was in a musical comedy with Bing Crosby, Greta Garbo, and Betty Davis. The plot was 2 washed up actors were trying to make a fool out of a successful one… and it failed miserably because it only made her more successful and them too in the process! I even heard a song I’ve never heard before. It was fabulous!
I’m thinking that “Bob” guy could probably benefit from medication.
That’s happened to me a number of times. The first one I can remember is after watching JAWS when it first released to the theaters. It was a summer release, and our family just happened to be having a beach vacation the very next week. I had nightmares about it, including me as the victim. Thankfully, I woke up just as I was about to get eaten. (I did not go very far out into the water that year.)
I have indeed had this dream before! Many times… I find it often happens with movies that I am highly anticipating; most often they aren’t anything like the real movie. Either I end up dreaming a terrible movie and the real movie ends up being really good, or the dream just goes bat-guano insane and starts including things that the director of the movie – be it Scorcese, PT Anderson, Malick, or the Brothers Coen – would never make.
The only exception to this is that I had a dream shortly after reading McCarthy’s NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN which I found – and still find – to be a deeply haunting story. Interestingly, the Coen’s rendition ended up looking very much like the dream I had about the movie as well as the movie I dreamed-up in my head whilst reading that terrific novel.
Yes, yes, and yes. And I dream I’ve written and now directing the movie and emphatically explaining a scene to my crew who is either so inspired by me or thinks I’m nuts. Usually dream I’m in a movie that I emotionally connected to so it got deep into my hippocampus. I’ve also dreamed about editing and final cut pro…
