My review of The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is up at Good Letters.
It’s a short review: I don’t get around to writing about just how much I love Will Poulter’s performance as Eustace, or just how disappointed I am in the flat, uninspired imagery throughout the film.
What I do describe is what seems to be a battle at the heart of the movie: A battle between those who want us to read the books and enjoy C.S. Lewis’s meaningful storytelling, and those who just want to make an entertaining movie, sacrificing Lewis’s rich imagination for cheap, familiar entertainment.
