Ran was the first Japanese movie I ever saw, and it kindled an appetite not just for more Kurosawa, but films of greater visual splendour than I’d was accustomed to seeing.
Wouldn’t you know, just when I wanted to pick up the Criterion edition, it went out of print.
And then, lo… it shows up on Hulu for free.
So… here it is… first time I’ve ever embedded a whole feature-length film on Looking Closer…
Enjoy.
Can only be streamed within the US 🙁
If you’re in the Seattle area, RAN is going to be playing…somewhere… for a week, starting September 3rd. It’s in the Landmark Theaters Calendar

But I’m honestly not sure which of the Landmark Theaters it is playing at. I’m totally stoked to go see this, when I figure it out, though. I’m a huge Kurosawa fan, but I have yet to see this film. It’s not often you get to see a new film from a dead master on the big screen.
Also of note: ALL of Tarkovsky’s features available for free at
… at?
….at where?

just wanted to build a little suspense.
Good heavens!!
RAN is playing at UC Berkeley’s Pacific Film Archives Saturday Aug. 21st at 5:30 and Sunday at 7PM. That is all.
