TotalFilm has a revealing interview with Guillermo Del Toro about his two upcoming Hobbit movies.
I’m very encouraged by Del Toro’s answers.
I’m encouraged too.
And now I’m going to lie awake at night wondering what you might do to make a dragon so new and surprising.
Hmmm.
Does he inhale long and deep before fire-breathing, and does the inhalation suck in the dust and debris of the world around him like pulling in kindling for a fire?
Does his size increase as the fires build up within him? So parts of him glow like a furnace?
Does he have those webbed fans around his face like the venom-spitting dragon in Jurassic Park?
I’m gonna fill a book with brainstorming guesswork on this.
What would you do if you had to design the best big-screen dragon ever?
I was especially excited by this quote in reference to the color palate in the film: “I think The Hobbit is a bit more colourful. And a bit more operatic. And whimsical.”
Yes! Whimsical! That is the one aspect that Hobbit needs vs. LOTR. They’ve got it! I was stoked before because Del Toro’s films show he know whimsy (especially Hellboy II) but now I’m sure he’s gonna nail this film! Excellent!!
