Shusaku Endo’s Silence is the most harrowing novel I’ve ever read (yes, even harsher than The Road), and one of the most moving and profound.
I’ve been reading about Martin Scorsese’s plans to make a film version for several years now, trying to imagine how anyone could translate that riveting nightmare of a story to the big screen.
Well, if he’s going to do it, he certainly moving in the right direction. This news is going to make it hard for me to think about anything else for a while….
Thanks to Peter Chattaway for the link.
Amazing! I can’t think of better choices.
(btw, I think it’s spelled Shusaku, unless there’s there’s an alternate spelling I don’t know)
Supposedly Javier Bardem was being considered a couple of years ago. I always thought Jim Caviezel would be an excellent choice myself. However, I don’t see any reason to second guess Marty now. Personally, as someone whose favorite Scorsese film is The Last Temptation of Christ, I’m really looking forward to this and have been for some time. I think Scorsese is the perfect director for the material. My only wish is that Paul Schrader was writing the script. Nothing against Jay Cocks, because he’s done some fine work before…it’s just that Schrader is more experienced, and he has that extra edge. Not to mention that his Calvinist upbringing would bring an interesting perspective to the story.
There was a Japanese film adaptation of this book back in the 70’s, but sadly it’s not available in the U.S. However, with Scorsese moving forward on this, that will likely change.
No. Way. This is phenomenal news – thanks for sharing it!
I figured Day-Lewis would have to be rescued from shoe-making again before his next film.
Most harrowing novel I’ve ever read? That would be ‘A Fine Balance’ by Rohinton Mistry. Also my favorite… For whatever reason I feel drawn to ‘harrowing’ so I’ll have to check out ‘Silence’ before the film hits the theaters.
