Roger Ebert: The Spirit is mannered to the point of madness. There is not a trace of human emotion in it. To call the characters cardboard is to insult a useful packing material. That movie looked extremelly dumb. 😛
Might I interject that Ebert and the critcs are being way too hard on the movie – it always mystifies me when a movie as intentionally ridiculous, incoherent, cliched, and downright ludicrous as The Spirit is gets slammed for being all of the above – Ebert criticizes the movie for using “Hercules” and “Heracles” interchangeably – but Ebert must have missed something, because that’s not the case at all, and the script even calls to attention to it purposefully. I saw the movie – and yes, it is pretty ridiculous – but also pretty fun. I liked it way better than Sin City, which was highly overrated.
