Guillermo del Toro has said that he cannot wait to bring Smaug to life in the big-screen version of The Hobbit.
And I’ve been writing about a dragon-like creature lately. (If you’ve read Auralia’s Colors or Cyndere’s Midnight, you can probably guess what I’m talking about.)
So I’ve had dragons on the brain lately. I’ve been thinking back to Dragonslayer, and more recently, to Reign of Fire.
What is your favorite big-screen dragon, and why?
Bonus question: Do you have any tips for Del Toro on what to do, or what not to do, when bringing Smaug to life?
Nice topic, Jeff.
My two cents – Elliott from “Pete’s Dragon,” and Sean Connery’s dragon from Dragonheart was also cool.
Worst dragon ever from the movies – Eragon.
I was going to say the dragon from Dragonheart, too!
However, some of the most fun dragons to see are those in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, even though they’re not really characters.
Although I didn’t like the film, the dragons in Dragon Wars were pretty cool. And you can’t go wrong with Sean Connery. 🙂
Being young, and not well versed in fantasy movies, the “Goblet” basilisk is pretty much the only one that comes to mind for me also, unless one counts the LotR fell beasts.
And yours, Jeff? Is “Dragonslayer” any good?
I’m thinking.
Believe it or not, I really like Smaug from Rankin/Bass’s version of The Hobbit.
I also like the white dragon in Spirited Away.
I was going to say Pete’s Dragon, but somebody got to it ahead of me. The scene in which Elliott is captured under a tarp gave me nightmares when I was a kid, and it still troubles me now. (Then again, the sight of Helen Reddy singing “Candle on the Water” gives me nightmares too.)
The dragon in Dragonslayer is awesome.
The dragon in Dragonheart is not.
The dragons in Reign of Fire were almost awesome, but we didn’t see enough of them, and talk about an anticlimax!
