Sixpence None the Richer was, for a long time, my #1 pick for Band That Should Get Back Together. Then, they did! So who should take a hint and follow their example?
I might recommend The Police, but, well… too late. And then, what about Portishead? Look! Here they come, together again, releasing 3 very soon!
Lone Justice might be near the top of my list now. Or The Smiths. Whiskeytown might force Ryan Adams to slow down and write some great songs again instead of album after album of decent songs. And I’d love to see The Traveling Wilburys get back together and replace Roy Oribson and George Harrison with… hmm… Robbie Robertson? Paul McCartney? Wait, no… Elvis Costello and Tom Waits.
Who would be at the top of your “Band I’d Most Like to See Together Again” list? (And no, please don’t nominate bands whose members are dead!)
Chagall.
Definitely the Traveling Wilburys. Maybe the 10,000 Maniacs, but Natalie Merchant does brilliantly on her own, so it’s not really necessary, I guess.
I’d say Sunny Day Real Estate, but Fire Theft is kinda sorta the old band back together.
So I’ll say 16 Horsepower or Pedro the Lion.
Dryve. Have you heard “Thrifty Mr. Kickstar”? I’m pretty sure it’s your kind of thing, Jeffrey.
See what Ed Rock says at Amazon…

The Johnson Mountain Boys!
I second Dryve. They were really good. Saw them in concert and it is still one of my favorite shows ever. Dime Store Prophets played that night as well…
I’m going to get killed for this, but I would love to see Whiteheart get back together. I still believe that “Freedom” is one of the best albums of the 80’s and still holds up well today. I would love to see “that” band back together.
Plankeye was always criminally underrated, and Eric Fielding has moved on to other things. His band Fielding is pretty good.
Chagall Guevara would be awesome as well. What would they sound like today?
Alas, 10KM could never get back together, since original guitarist Rob Buck died. Also, Natalie Merchant’s music has been significantly less compelling since she left the group.
However, that being said, I’m all for The Alarm to get back together, with Dave Sharp, not the Mike Peters-led pale imitation of the group that now records under the name The Alarm.
And, most importantly, we need Midnight Oil to record again. They don’t have to tour, so Peter Garrett can go on with doing whatever he’s doing. Just record.
And while we’re at it, it’s about time for the guys in Moxy Fruvous to end their “sabbatical”. The times we live in cry out for the treatment that only Moxy Fruvous can provide.
I’d go with the Wilburys, using Chris Isaak’s voice to take the role of Roy Orbison’s (I carefully do not say “replace”) and just to make them kind of different, Robert Cray or Keb’ Mo’ to round out the quintet.
Other than that, I guess it would be Jason and the Scorchers or Chagall Guevara.
Either The Blasters or The Vigilantes of Love.
Tears for Fears. If they haven’t already.
The Call. What’s Michael Been doing these days?
