Did you see Stephen Colbert’s rather memorable interview with Dr. Philip Zombardo?
When the misguided doctor begins to explain that Lucifer was justified in rebelling against God, Colbert takes him to school. Sunday school. And he does so in his own fearless fashion, mixing truth with his own brand of irony.
But viewer discretion is advised: There is a crass, but bleeped, exclamation in this clip. (And yet, who can blame him for having strong feelings on this subject?)
Thanks to Opus for alerting me to this at ArtsandFaith.
I was wondering if anyone else had noticed that . . . what an exchange! I’ve developed a great appreciation for the way Colbert’s show and on-air persona have developed and deepened since it began as a rather unsubtle (and one-note) satire on right-wing punditry. A fantastic (and quite unexpected) few minutes of television, indeed.
As to that exclamation . . . I have to confess that I thought it was a hilarious statement. I laugh everytime I think about it . . . It’s so incongruous, yet it sounds so appropriate in context, and he deadpans it marvellously. It almost seems as though it should be on a t-shirt (almost).
I think “I teach Sunday School…” is at least as good a t-shirt slogan as “Colbert Has Stones”.
I posted this on my blog yesterday as well…great interview and Colbert really let his persona down for a minute or so, it was fantastic, funny, insightful.
And yes, his phrase perfectly captures the moment!
