Rotten Tomatoes has just compiled their list of the Best-Reviewed Films of 2007 (so far). And I am not at all surprised to see which film holds a commanding lead. What’s the best film of the year so far according to you? Of what I’ve seen, I’d have to say “Ratatouille.” Probably followed by “Zodiac.” I really, really had fun at “Grindhouse”, though.
I’m not really caught up on the Indie scene as of yet, but plan on seeing “Once”, “Red Road”, and something else this weekend if I go into the city.
BTW, the HD trailer for “No Country for Old Men” is at Quicktime. It looks darned amazing in 1080p.
I’ve seen 3 excellent films (the first 2 of them documentaries, no less). I saw this one last year, but it’ll be considered a 2007 film: Into Great Silence. Second there’s the neo-Freudian/post-Marxist cinematic adventure, The Pervert’s Guide to Cinema. And finally, the excellent Russian film, The Return.
BTW, nice work snagging the blurb with the Gardner reference!
Those are pretty solid lists on both ends of the scale. It nonetheless surprises me that The Reaping was as rotten as all that, though I don’t disagree at all.
The one omission from the top of the list for me would be At World’s End. Though it’s not at all what critics or audiences wanted or expected, I think it’s every bit as detailed and insightful contemplation on the filmmaking business as Ratatouille — perhaps even more sophisticatedly (if pessimistically) so. If I called for a critical reassessment of any film in 2007, this would probably be it.
Ratatouille. No contest.
The Wind that Shakes the Barley. Unforgettable.
Jeffery, have you seen it?
Gotta go with Into Great Silence, a film well suited to encourage the discipline of “looking closer.” For me, there hasn’t been a more evocative film in the last couple of years.
Rescue Dawn is a close second for its heartfelt, irony-free treatment of a Vietnam survival story. With Herzog, what you see is what you get.
Bronze medal goes to Brand Upon the Brain! because there’s nothing in the world like it (except for most other Guy Maddin films, of course).
It depresses me that I’ve seen three films on the bottom list (Norbit, The Number 23, and The Reaping). Then again, I got to see them all early and for free.
Top 3:
1. Once
2. Into Great Silence
3. Ratatouille
My top 5 of the year so far…

2. Ratatouille
3. Hairspray (just saw it last night–loved it)
4. Starter for 10
5. Zodiac
The Namesake
Amazing Grace
Ratatouille

Waitress
Children of Men (I know it was released in 2006, but I saw it in 2007)
Best of 2007
1. The Wind that Shakes the Barley
2. Zodiac
3. Paris Je T’aime
4. Ratatouille
5. Hot Fuzz
6. You Kill Me
7. Once
Most overrated goes to ‘Away From Her’ whose cinematography was beyond amateur and while the performances were great the story couldn’t muster any narrative drive.
Then despite good reviews, the films I truly hated this year: few films have made me angrier than Red Road, which is disappointing since I loved everything about the first half. Then Private Fears in Public Places was just plain dull; for a film about people making personal connections there wasn’t much chemistry on the screen.
So far (and note that I’m married to the guy above):
I think my favorite has been Paris je t’aime, followed by Once, Ratatouille, Zodiac, and You Kill Me.
The Wind That Shakes the Barley was indeed brilliant, though.
And we saw The Lives of Others in 2007 . . . but I know it doesn’t count. (We also saw such delights as The Long Goodbye this year, so . . . )
Let me concur: we saw Red Road in the press screening and it was miserable; I backed out on a review I was writing because I didn’t want to draw attention to the film in case someone saw the review and decided to see the film. Please skip.
I’m surprised no one has mentioned 300. I think that is the best movie I’ve seen this year. My second favorite is Transformers. I know its not gonna win any best picture awards, but it was lot of fun.
Top 10 of this year so far?
1. Ratatouille
2. 300
3. Zodiac
4. Hot Fuzz
5. Sicko
6. Grindhouse
7. Knocked Up
8. Transformers
9. Reign Over Me
10. Live free or Die Hard
Haven’t gotten around to many indies yet this summer, and I’m an action junkie.
