I’m listening to the critics at Slant Magazine this year.
Why? Well, because both of them picked The New World as the best film of 2005, having seen only a hastily fashioned awards-consideration version.
Looking at their picks for this year, I’m already agreeing with several of their choices. And some of them I haven’t seen yet, but I’ll have to get out to track them down now.
I’ll be publishing my list on New Year’s Day, but that’ll be just an early version. Several key 2005 films are still on my must-see list.
I’ve been reading a lot of Slant this year, and I enjoy the way it takes delight in going its own way, unapologetically endorsing films that other critics can’t stand, and slamming those that are critical favorites.
But still, Ed Gonzalez has “Little Children” on his “worst of 2006” list? Another Slant writer told me he was avoiding that movie, based on what some of his colleagues had to say about it.
Nobody’s perfect. It’s their loss.
Interesting! It’s done in a really nice format too. I’m glad to see THE PROPOSITION mentioned. It deserves to be seen, more than Mel’s latest does imho…
I’m still not a huge fan of Miami Vice. I enjoy their lists though and I’m finally convinced that I need to see L’Enfant.
If you scroll down the list, one reader states that he did not watch The Nativity Story because ” How can you look at Mary (Keisha Castle-Hughes) who is knocked up by her boy friend and feel a true portrayal of the Virgin Mother?” I hope he was joking.
Did he feel that Jim Caviezel as Jesus in The Passion of the Christ was a true portrayal of Christ? There is so much wrong with that line of thinking. How did we (Christians) get like this?
Yep, those big screen crotch grabs cause me to stumble everytime…
i actually want to see ‘blades of glory’ now. and then turn to my right and ask Jesus if he thought it was funny enough.
