Quote of the day:
highlighted by Jeff Berryman at The Daily Hopper:
“A spinning coin cannot spin forever, nor can our minds remain undecided forever, since not to decide is itself a decision, and as the coin will come down only heads or tails, so we also have only two options, not three or more. Either we conform our desires to the truth, or we conform the truth to our desires.” –Os Guinness
Today’s specials:
WHAT? GROMIT’S GETTING RAVE REVIEWS?
My prediction: Wallace and Gromit and the Curse of the Were-Rabbit will be the year’s best-reviewed film.
A.O. Scott gets it right, adoring Wallace and Gromit… But doesn’t he realize that this is FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT, and thus it’s part of a CONSERVATIVE AGENDA?
WHAT? GOVERNMENT-BASHING?
Joss Whedon talks about Serenity and explains its political implications.
WHAT? SYMBOLISM?!
The L.A. Times’ version of the “Is Narnia Christian?” article.
WHAT? CHARLIE WHO?
The return of Charlie Sexton, heralded by Josh Hurst.
WHAT? BRUCE WILLIS AS A RACCOON?
The next Dreamworks animated film features Bruce Willis, Steve Carrell, and William Shatner.
WHAT? GARY OLDMAN UNDERRATED?
Well, duh. David Poland considers the most overlooked masters of our film era.
Re: WHAT? GOVERNMENT-BASHING?
-=o=-SPOILERS-=o=-
Yeah. I try and not hold it against the film, but things almost approached the hairy side of partisan allegory/propaganda near the end of Serenity.
The Alliance (the U.S.) tries to make the populace of a planet (the Middle East) better by feeding them something through the air (imposing democracy and/or Western ideals), but ends up killing most of them (turning them into mindless puppets of capitalism) and turning a minority into Reavers (terrorists).
BTW, today Serenity is #119 on the IMDB’s list of 250 top-rated films by the online public.
But doesn’t he realize that this is FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT, and thus it’s part of a CONSERVATIVE AGENDA?
Presumably the bawdy “Benny Hill vulgarity” he refers to (and there is a lot more in the film than I, for one, expected!) put his mind at ease.
hello Jeff,
I’m from Holand i’m a fan of X-Men. I read your report about your experience on th set of X3. Congrats – You’re so lucky
The the casting recommendation you made. Can you please say the name of character they want to cast? If not please give some hints? Is it a mutant or a human? Good guy or villain?
Thanks.
Best,
Retroman
About the X-Men recommendation, it involved the small role of an interrogator.
Thanks Jeff!
Interesting stuff. Thinks has got me thinking….
Hi Again Jeff,
I was wondering – could you please answer this (cause i’m going crazy trying to figure out who you’re hinting at)
What is the name of the actor you recommended? Or is the actor/actress (male or female?) well known or a relative unknown? Is it a mutant?
Thanks.
Best,
Retroman
Retroman, you are a very curious person. If it drives you crazy, my deepest apologies, but I feel compelled to keep some of this to myself. When the film opens, then I’ll be free to talk about the things discussed that afternoon on the set more openly.
In the back of my mind i knew you weren’t that you might answer. I thought i’d just give it a shot.
Look forward to next May when i’ll be seeing the film (hopefully enjoying it) and reading more about your experience on the set.
Best regards
Rephrase (excuse my bad english)

On “The Gospel” (and I quote):
Mike Furches (Hollywood Jesus) writes, “Why did the church not get behind this film and support it as they have virtually most other ‘religious’ film of recent years?
Probably because it sucked. And was an unabashed “Christian” movie by a soft-porn auteur.
What would’ve been a great movie would be get the musical acts involved in that movie in a concert movie and let the largely white Christian audience Fuerches is obviously writing about (and here I’m wondering if he knows that multicultural and non-white churches are fully capable of operating independently of white churches) experience that.
What surprised me is that I went to the Rotten Tomatoes site for Hostel…some of the bad reviews for Hostel are from Horror magazines like Rue Morgue.
