Darren’s elaborating on an exquistely filmed Claire Denis film, its provocative soundtrack, and one of my all-time favorite closing scenes. I missed this one in the theatre, but it’s still entrancing on DVD. Watching Beau Travail is a like listening to a two-hour joke with a great punchline. I mean, wow, man, that punchline was really funny, just hilarious, but golly gee, couldn’t you condense the set-up just a bit?
It does look pretty cheesy, which is too bad because the book, while a quiet story, is really very short on cheese.
I wonder if they’ll drop the Jewish mysticism for the film. It was fairly integral to the narrative.
