My friend Dick Staub recently impressed the heck out of me all over again with his eloquence on the subject of art and faith when we joined a panel discussion for Christians in the Theatre Arts. In fact, the conversation between us, writer/actor Jeff Berryman, and actor Grant Goodeve was probably the most exciting dialogue on faith and art I’ve experienced. I wish I’d recorded it, because I want transcripts of everything those guys said.
Dick’s new book should be in your mailbox on Thursday. That is, if you’re pre-ordered it through Amazon. It’s called Christian Wisdom of the Jedi Masters.
Amazon summary:
Written by award-winning radio personality Dick Staub, this compelling book is filled with anecdotes from the Star Wars films that serve as a launching pad into rediscovering authentic Christianity. Christian Wisdom of the Jedi Masters also contains quotes from revered “Jedi Christians” such as Thomas Merton, Teresa of Avila, the Apostle Paul, G. K. Chesterton, and other theologians, mystics, writers, and philosophers. The author sheds new light on the struggles and challenges of living faithfully in postmodern life and offers a reintroduction to what C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien called the “one true myth,” Christianity.

UPDATE: I’ve been blurbed! (Scroll down to the comments that have been printed on the back cover of Staub’s book.)
Hmmm… Dick and I go to the same church. Maybe I’ll have to ask him about these Christian Jedi persons!
Brad Pitt’s producing Billy Bob Thornton? There’s gotta be some way to bring Jonny Lee Miller (Angelina Jolie husband number one), too!
That is a gorgeous, wonderful book. I hope the movie conveys the same graceful spirit — even though it’s not (I hope) from the people making the film, the summary as a “tale of loyalty and revenge” seems to me to miss the point.
