Yes, like it or not, New Moon is here. And last night’s midnight opening show set some kind of all-time box-office record for such arrivals. Basically, ticket-buyers told Hollywood: WE WANT MORE OF THIS. And so, that is what moviegoers will receive. Except what’s coming will be even worse because it will be even more derivative. (If somebody wants to pick up a worthwhile vampire story, get your hands on the rights to Robin McKinley’s Sunshine, which is actually worth reading.)
So, how’s the movie?
I can’t help but feel sad at the news that Catherine Hardwicke’s been fired from directing the next installment of the Twilight franchise.
Well, I’ve run out of time to deliver the review of Twilight I’d hoped to write this weekend. Too busy working on the third book of The Auralia Thread, and we had our Thanksgiving dinner a week early, thanks to a visit from my parents.
But that’s okay, because I’ve got something much better for you than my disgruntled perspective on the film. The best thing I’ve read on the appeal of Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight is Laura Miller’s article in Salon. It is a brilliant interpretation and diagnosis. And very well written.
Read all two pages of it here. It makes a lot of sense. And it’s kind of scary.
