What am I looking forward to in 2012? Surprises. There are quite a few of them in my Favorites of 2011 list.
But I was fairly confident at the beginning of the year that Certified Copy and The Tree of Life would be major events. This year, I see a lot of very promising titles on the horizon. I hope that none of them are in my final list of favorites, because that would mean I have ten big surprises on the way.
Still, I’m rather confident that this one will be near the top of the list:
- The Master (Paul Thomas Anderson, arriving in 2012 or 2013)
Also promising:
- Argo (Ben Affleck)
- Brave (Mark Andrews & Brenda Chapman)
- Cogan’s Trade (Andrew Dominick)
- Cosmopolis (David Cronenberg)
- Creed of Violence (Todd Field)
- The Deep Blue Sea (Terence Davies)
- Elena (Andrei Zvyagintsev)
- The End (Abbas Kiarostami)
- Frank or Francis (Charlie Kaufman)
- The Grandmasters (Wong Kar-Wai)
- Gravity (Alfonso Cuaron)
- Haywire (Steven Soderbergh)
- Inside Llewyn Davis (The Coen Brothers)
- Life of Pi (Ang Lee)
- Lincoln (Steven Spielberg)
- The Loneliest Planet (Julia Loktev)
- Miss Bala (Gerardo Naranjo)
- Moonrise Kingdom (Wes Anderson)
- Much Ado About Nothing (Joss Whedon) (I’m curious about Whedon’s Avengers as well, but the trailers look awful.)
- Mud (Jeff Nichols)
- On the Road (Walter Salles)
- A Separation (Asghar Farhadi)
- Skyfall (Sam Mendes)
- Under the Skin (Jonathan Glazer)
- Untitled (not called The Burial) (Terence Malick)
- The Dark Knight Rises (Christoher Nolan)
- The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (Peter Jackson)
- Wettest County (John Hillcoat)
What have I forgotten? Let me know.
