Okay, so the majority rules that The Wolf Man is a miserable failure of a film.
Me?
I had a blast.
I’ve written about it for Image. It’s up on their site today.

I love this review. What a great parallel! :)

I enjoyed it, too. It had no pretensions, no narrative flab and, unlike certain movies made by respected filmmakers who shall go charitably unnamed, didn’t feature horribly out-of-place performances such as a Victorian gentleman being played by Keanu Reeves. Indeed, it pretty much succeeded on its casting alone.

I thought the movie was refreshing, given the current climate of the horror genre. Saw, Hostel, High Tension, and the rest have delivered an incredibly cynical wave of gory spectacle that is downright wearying. And on the other side you have all the pg-13 throw-away thrillers (the Grudge, One Missed Call, etc). Then you’ve got ‘The Wolfman’, sitting in middle as the oddball that nobody knows how to handle. Yeah, it’s got a bunch of technical issues and you could really pick it apart IF YOU WANTED, but it’s got a lot to like as well. I loved the art direction (reminded me of ‘Sleepy Hollow’) and I thought Rick Baker’s makeup work was awesome. It’s okay people, you’re allowed to have fun with this one.

I think your review is pretty much spot-on, Jeffrey. I actually enjoyed myself at The Wolfman, which I wasn’t expecting to – I thought it’d be a plodding bore, but it moves along at a brisk pace and the couple of excellent performances from Anthony Hopkins and Hugo Weaving (IMO, he steals the movie) plus the grotesquely good creature effects were enough to keep me entertained, if not enthralled and nowhere near scared. Ryan is right – it’s got a bunch of technical issues in terms of plot, character development, and the giggle-worthy romance between Blunt and del Toro, and you could pick it apart – IF YOU WANTED. I gave it a 6/10 in my review, and I’d recomment it to any horror/monster fan. A fun Friday night at the movies, but not much else. At least they didn’t set it in 21st Century New York with Jason Statham as the titular character…..*shiver*

Is there a reason why you have the “read on” link? I like reading your blog but it’s quite annoying to have to click to “read on” (for often a mere sentence or two!) constantly. I don’t understand why the website would be set up like this. If you have a 4 sentence post like this one, why can’t it appear on the front page?
