No no no no no. Please say it isn’t so.

If Tobey Maguire is your Bilbo Baggins, why not cast Nicolas Cage as Thorin Oakenshield or Nathan Lane as the voice of Smaug?

Seriously, I hope this is just a bad case of jumping to the wrong conclusions.

Ian Holm played Bilbo in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings films, so why not find someone who actually looks and sounds like a young Ian Holm?

According to The One Ring.net (pretty much as official as you can get for Tolkien news) this rumor has been debunked. Thankfully…

Gee, I was kinda hoping for Cage as Thorin. =D Maybe Will Ferrell as the Great Goblin, and Woody Allen as the voice of Smaug?

Have you seen Brothers? If you have you should know Tobey cannot be so easily tossed into the same category as Nathan Lane and Nicolas Cage….Brothers is Tobey Maguire’s best acting movie. He played two completely believable sides to the same character, and each one was riveting in its own way.

I don’t know about this rumour, in all likelihood I think it’ll probably turn out to be Hollywood bunk, but if it ends up being true I think it could actually end up being a good thing.

And now that I think about it, Tobey Maguire’s eyes kinda/sorta have the same wide-eyed and varied expressions that Elijah Wood has….and besides, Viggo-who-the-crap-is-he-Mortensen when he was cast as Aragorn was thrown into doubt; Heath Ledger as the Joker was met with many “WTF’s” when his role was announced (and we all know how that turned out), and let’s not forget Elijah Wood himself who most people were dead set against before the first LOTR came out. I think Jackson and Del Toro are going to make some good decisions, regardless of what they are.
