You’re going to need a fork.

Mosey on over to Filmwell, pull up a chair, and let me serve you a heaping plate of Caille en Sarcophage.

What are your favorite films about food? Has a scene ever inspired you to cook?

Like Water for Chocolate, but it didn’t inspire me to start cooking. I also really enjoyed the scene in Twin Peaks when Ben and Jerry Horne were exulting over some kind of Nordic roll (baguettes?) and, of course, all Dale Cooper’s exclamations over huckleberry pie, donuts, and damn fine coffee.

Wow, Jeremy. GREAT example. I love that Horne Brothers scene.

OK, this may sound odd but . . . Goodfellas. While not about food, there’s a food theme throughout the film. I was with 4 others when we saw it for the first time in LA & we were all so hungry after that we went for Italian! To this day I slice my garlic paper thin so it almost liquidizes in the pan when I’m making a red sauce.

Dan in Real Life made me want to perfect my pancake-making abilities! (SIGH) If only Juliette Binoche would eat them with me . . .

Wonderful article, although, having just seen Waitress for the first time, I would have liked to have seen it mentioned.

I love how food — in the Bible, in literature, in movies — draws people together and reveals their characters. I have yet to see the three movies you focused on, although I’ve wanted to see Babbette’s Feast and Sideways for a while. I’m not too sure about Ratatouille, I have a thing about rats.

    How did I forget Waitress??!!

  6. Rick Ro. Says:

    Charlotte, thanks for mentioning Ratatouille.

(SPOILER ALERT) – Near the end of the film, mean-spirited restaurant critic Anton Ego gets served a plate of ratatouille. His reaction to tasting it, and the flashback that follows, is one of the most sublime moments in children’s cinematic history. Ratatouille ranks up there with Toy Story 2 and Monsters, Inc. as my favorite kids movies.

Naturally my daughter and I, along with my father, proceeded to look up ratatouille recipes and try it out for ourselves.

Eat drink man woman. Saw it once at the Dutch l’Abri. Very good.

I suppose a lot of people haven’t seen it, but I’d have to go with kamome(seagull) diner. The food or the diner in this case is just a tool to reveal character, and does it so beautifully. I’d agree with the scene from Rataouille and add the scene from Amelie where the character eats chicken with his fingers. It was mouth-watering.
