Jeff,
you are a breathe of fresh air. I find myself in a spiritual battle and this review put the feelings of my heart into words. You must have wings or something. Someone needs to check you for feathers.

Jeffrey, when you asked people for their Favorite 10 Films of 1999, this made my list. Truly an underappreciated Civil War masterpiece. Its continual shifts in plot make it far from formulaic, and always interesting. Even the final scene with Jake Roedel's nemesis, the loose cannon played by Jonathan Rhys-Myers, was uniquely satisfying. I bought the DVD when it came out long ago, and now I look forward to, perhaps, a "better" version.

Thanks for reminding me of this film. I remember being pleasantly surprised by it when it came out. It's sort of gotten buried under the rest of Lee's filmography, which is too bad. I think it withstands comparisons to his best work. Maybe it was a film without sufficient social context. As the release of "Inglorious Basterds" nears, this film strikes me as a terrific counterpoint.
