This has to be the best star trek i have seen. It finally shows spock with emotion and focuses more on him and Uhura. Its about time to show black women in control. Uhura is the sexy black woman that Kirk try's to continually get into bed but she prefers spock.

I saw the movie, thought it was a real lick in the pants. I've seen every episode of Star Trek TOS (more times than really necessary), but only some of TNG, one of DS9, a few of Voyager, and most of Enterprise. I am also a die hard Star Wars fan (with the usual caveats to the 'prequels') Thanks for showing the Star Wars aspect of this Star Trek endeavor. eye opening to say the least.
One funny thing watching the movie was I've just gotten into Heroes as of late, and with George Takei playing in Heroes and then seeing Zachary Quinto as Spock (who I kept expecting to point his finger at peoples foreheads) it really threw me for a bit of Sci-Fi loop there for a minute.

I've always been a fan of Star Trek, not to be confused with the convention-going Trekies. Growing up with Kirk and Spock as my role models, I quickly glommed on to TNG with Picard and Data taking us deeper into Roddenbury's world view. I followed the other series without enthusiasm, but I enjoyed them. The movies that evolved from the TV series were fun, but felt too much like longer versions of the series.

I loved the new movie. It was fun, exciting, and clever. The one lacking element that I'm surprised more fans haven't cited is the all-powerful Prime Directive. Does this mean the end to Rodenbury's dream of a utopian future? Have we given up as a generation on a hopeful future for mankind ruled by the Federation's dictum of non-interference?

Who cares. I had a blast!

Thanks, Vikki! Nice to hear from you.

And thanks for the package you sent me recently. I had a great time browsing all of the latest exotic locations where you've carried Auralia's Colors.

Heya Jeffrey!

Saw Star Trek once in the regular theater and twice in an Imax Theater in the past two weeks... The second time was with friends from the States who arrived one day before watching the movie in Imax. The first-timer in the country cried out, "I'm gonna marry Spock!"... Oh well, college girls! Anyways, I wasn't a Trekkie at all but this movie just got me hooked. I would love the idea of being friends with Chekov and force him to say my name correctly ... :)

Enjoyed this review very much!

I have to point out that space is only silent sometimes, as other times the clanging of torpedoes and phasers can readily be heard. Also, Galactica's space is often quite noisy, with thrusters flaring and guns blazing, as well as whatever that sound is that Cylon raiders make as they pass by.

Good points on the Star Wars parallels. I also felt that Abrams realized that his planet killing effect had little emotional impact, so he had to punch it up with a single person they couldn't rescue in time.

Spock attributed the A. Conan Doyle quote to one of his ancestors in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991) -- a movie that was full of quotes from famous books and plays (most notably the Hamlet reference in the title, but also other Shakespeare plays, as well as the Doyle quote, and also the Peter Pan reference when Kirk sets course for "second star to the right, and straight on 'til morning").
