The Top Dog and Cat Names of 2008

Admit it. This is the list you’ve all been waiting for.

Personally, I’m still hoping to someday have a dog named “Steve.”

I mean, who wrote the rule book on which Person Names are appropriate for animals and which names aren’t? I get such a kick out of the idea: “Come here, Steve! Steve, heel!” and then the menacing, scolding, “Steeeephen….”

By the way, if anyone out there is reading Cyndere’s Midnight, did you happen to notice anything interesting about the names of the dogs in that book?

(By the way: This has nothing to do with any Steves I know. I just have never met a dog named Steve.)

    Stevesy might be nice too.

  2. Josh Hurst Says:

Our dog’s name is Steve. No joke.

  3. Abby Says:

I have a dog named Joshua…so I’m all for Steve. I like it!

  4. Allie Says:

I met a cat named Steve before. He was really sweet.

  5. closerlooker Says:

My friends Todd and Angie recently got a dog, and they let their children name him. And those kids are creative geniuses.

    The dog’s name is Bravery.

  6. Martin Baggs Says:

Talking of cats and dogs, there is an interesting book out called “Cat and Dog Theology: Rethinking Our Relationship with Our Master.” Worth a read.

  7. E. Jones Says:

I had a friend long ago whose cat was named Larry Bird. It struck me as funny because they never shortened it to Larry. It was always Larry Bird.

  8. Luke Says:

    “cool party, Steve”

  9. Molly Says:

Our dog is named Gideon because we really liked the name but thought that it would be too much of a name to saddle a kid with. Our cat is Phoebe. :)

And you already know that I noticed the significance of the dog names in Cyndere’s Midnight, but I’ll let someone else take a shot since I have unfair advantage! ;)

  10. Molly Says:

And of course the 4th most popular dog name is Molly. If I had a dime for every time I introduced myself and the person said, “My dog’s named Molly” I’d have a nice little nest egg.

  11. Abby Says:

Molly I have had the same thing…lots of dogs named Abby…course I will also admit to adding to your nest egg…my first dog’s name was Molly :)

  12. Annette Says:

Presently, I have a cat named Sauvage, Fr. for “wild”, because she’s 25% Serval. My previous cats were: Coquette, Fr. for “flirt”, because she had one eye sewed shut; and Sorbet, because as a dilute-calico she looked like a tiny bowl of ice cream when I first saw her all curled up. Our (German) shepherd is named Leica, of course.
My fantasy for any future guard dogs is to have two and name them Justice and Mercy. I’d relish calling out those names! And I’d love a yard sign which reads: “Beware of Justice, Mercy’s been fed.”

  13. Beth Says:

According to the story, the trend is to give pets “people” names–like Steve, or Molly. My #1 cat is named after a fictional person, “Xander.” Xander then brought home his own kitten buddy, who inevitably named himself “Buddy,” even though we tried to think of something more exotic.
