2000 – 2009: Looking Closer’s Annual Favorite Film Lists

Welcome to the archive of LookingCloser.org’s annual movie lists!

These are the films I found most rewarding, most worth revisiting.

But please note: I cannot say that I recommend all of them, as they may not be appropriate or rewarding to all audiences. So please do your research: Don’t just grab one of these titles and sit down to watch it on a date, or with the kids.

Films in red

are films I’d call “Essential.” They’re sitting on the shelf of my Dream Library. These are the films that I watch over and over again, enjoying more about them with every visit. Some years, we get several. Some years I’m lucky to find one.

*’d films

were released outside of America, and/or played in a festival or a very brief limited U.S. engagement, earlier than the year where I’ve rated them here.

Categories

Films are categorized by year, with a “Looking Closer Movie of the Year,” a “Favorite Fantasy Film of the Year,” a “Top Ten,” and then a list of other films worth seeing more than once.

These lists will be revised and expanded from time to time.

I’m working backward through my life, reassessing and revising old lists, so check back as this record expands back into the 1990s and 1980s.

Please don’t hesitate to email me and recommend films that I’ve missed, or tell me if I’ve mis-categorized something.

To the best of my ability, I’ve organized films by the year that they became accessible in the U.S., either through a theatrical release or on DVD. (Brief Oscar-qualifying runs in L.A. and New York are not enough to qualify a film for that year’s release, in my opinion. I’m going by when they became available to most of us ordinary moviegoing Americans.)

5 Responses to “2000 – 2009: Looking Closer’s Annual Favorite Film Lists”

  1. Chris Says:

Jeff– would it be possible to get a list up of “Essentials” that aren’t covered by this archive?

  2. John Says:

I second Chris’s request. I’d love to see a list of your “essentials” that date back before 2000, including oldies that are worth seeing.

(I’d also like to see a list of the best movies for kids/young people. I find myself standing, for long periods of time, in the Family and Children aisles of the video store, seeing almost nothing but junk and wondering about the few movies that actually look somewhat interesting. My daughter loved The Water Horse, which we saw a couple months ago, and the new Lassie, which we saw last night on your recommendation. So … what else should we be watching?)

  3. closerlooker Says:

    Good news!

In the back of my book Through a Screen Darky, I included my lists of films I recommend most highly for discussion groups. Those lists are pretty close to what I’d offer in response to these questions. Of course, I haven’t had an exhaustive film education, so I can only recommend films I’ve spent a lot of time watching and considering. But that’s a hefty list, and you’ll find it at the back of that book.

What is more, you’ll find a link in the back of the book that leads you to additional resources. Those resources include lists of movies grouped by Theme, so that you can choose from those lists and host your own particular film festival on any of the themes suggested. Among those resources is a list of films I highly recommend for children.

  4. Christopher Says:

    Jeffrey-

I read your blog regularly and have seen quite a few great films thanks to you.

My top two movies are the same. Shotgun Stories was absolutely brilliant and I have shown it to everyone I know.

Thank you for putting the spotlight on many fine and important films that might otherwise languish in obscurity.

  5. Brian D Says:

    Dear Jeffrey,

Just noticed you added “Heartbeat Detector” to your best of list for ‘08. As you can see, I watch your lists closely because I’m always intrigued to see what new gems you’ll uncover. Can you please tell us what you liked about it? Sounds fascinating on Rotten Tomatoes. (And I have to know how it could have gone one-up on “Rachel Getting Married”, one of the greatest joys of my ‘09 moviegoing!)

    Brian
