@deirdremarkii, I remember it very very well that is one of those films that left images (but not so much story) imprinted in my mind. That is one of those unforgettable scenes. I will have Kleenex when I see WALL*E.

Does anyone remember Douglas Trumbull's wonderful 1972 "environmental" film, "Silent Running"?

In that film Trumbull departed from the dangerously insane robot model of "HAL" that was so effective in his earlier "2001, A Space Odyssey" and instead employed what I think were the first cute, noble and relatable robots in the characters of Hewey, Dewie and Louie. We somehow knew these little guys understood death and loss, and loneliness, and we loved them. I've always felt they were the prototypes for R2-D2; and, now, for Wall-E.

At the end of the movie, one of these little "drones" is left all alone to tend the forest dome, and his anthropomorphic sadness and resigned loneliness are strongly conveyed as he looks up and watches the destruction of the ship from which he and his forest dome have been separated; then, quietly, he turns away to carry out his solitary duties - one feels - forever. I wept for that little drone, and I'll probably weep for Wall-E.

Good story and interview! I normally don't get excited about animated films, but this one has me intrigued. Especially when I read it opens with half an hour without any dialogue, a great work of cinema, etc. Hmmm...2001 anybody?

I feel so stupid for not being able to see how vapid Pixar films are. Good interview. You covered a lot of ground in ten minutes.

I kind of think all this "controversy" about Wall•E was way overblown. Its current Rotten Tomatoes rating is 98%, with only one negative review out of 52, and its metacritic rating is 93, based on 11 reviews.
